The Church of Agia Theodora bearing 17 Trees on the Roof
The tiny church of Agia Theodora lies at a height of 500 m (1,650 ft) in the mountains of Arcadia, 2 km north of the small village of Dasochori, but more easily accessed from Megalopoli via a road that reaches 865 m (2,855 ft). Built next to a spring in the 9th or 10th century, the church marks the site of the martyrdom of St Theodora.
A friendly monk in the information kiosk has a booklet about her life, in several languages. No less than 17 trees grow from the stone roof, yet inside the church there is no sign of their roots! It’s a short walk along the stream to a 19th century water mill with flour for sale, next to the Neromilos Taverna (open daily for coffee and meals). A very surprising site indeed.
