The Flood at Camping Thines
19 December 2017
After a long dry spell, a large sand dune grew in front of the empty Minaghiotiko River which normally runs alongside the lane to Camping Thines near Finikounda, in the far southwest of the Greek Peloponnese.
After a day or two of occasionally heavy rain, the river started to flow again and built up behind the dune, flooding the road and the surrounding area. About 8 am, Yanni from the campsite started digging a channel in the dune between the flooded area and the sea. Eventually the river broke through, turning the sea brown!
Ironically, 'Thines', the name of the campsite, means 'Dunes'.
