The Strasbourg Jewish Cemetery
We are halted by the site of a large overgrown cemetery with a new wire mesh fence. It appears desperately neglected and vandalised, the leaning headstones bear no crosses, the inscriptions are in both French and Hebrew, with no post-war dates. On the torn noticeboard we read that in 1802 the land was bought by the Jewish community to make a graveyard. It is a suitably grey overcast day, with a rookery in the overhead trees completing the picture.
