A Visit to Ancient Corinth
A Greco-Roman-Byzantine Site
Originally a Greek city (8th C BC) with temples and fountains. Destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC. Re-settled and developed by the Romans under Julius Caesar from 44 BC, growing to be the provincial capital. Corinth was the base for Apostle and tent-maker St Paul, who was put on trial here for attempting to convert Jews to Christianity. Roman Proconsul Gallio refused to judge what he called a mere dispute among the Jews. The site was occupied until the middle ages.
