Estonia: In the Lahemaa National Park
Lahemaa National Park is a park located in northern Estonia, 70 kilometers east from the capital Tallinn. The Gulf of Finland is to the north of the park and the Tallinn-Narva highway is to the south. Its area covers 725 km². It was the first area to be designated a national park of the former Soviet Union.
During our visit we stayed on the campsite at the excellent Kohvikann ('Coffee Pot') Restaurant. Manager Julia (originally from Russia) and Chef Dieter (originally from Germany) offer a great service along with lots of insights into the history and present development of the their adopted country.
Several cycle rides took us through the forested national park and along peninsulas reaching out into the Baltic Sea. There are manor houses dating back to the days of German occupation and many signs of the long years when Estonia was a constituent part of the Soviet Union (USSR). Now in many ways it is ahead of the UK and not least in the provision of free WiFi wherever you go!
