Spring 2018: Ionion Beach Camping Revisited and Renewed
The Fligos Family
Originally, Michael Fligos’s parents were shepherds, spending summers in the mountains and winters in the plains near the sea. In 1972, the family settled near Glyfa in the northwest of the Greek Peloponnese, buying land to grow potatoes and water melons. Michael married a local girl, Anna, and they had two sons, Theodore and George. In 1982, after a brief spell as a truck driver, Michael opened a campsite on the land by the sea, sharing it with a crop of potatoes.
Gradually expanding, the apartments opened in 1993 and the first swimming pool and beach bar in 1996. Our first visit was in 1995! Over the ensuing years the campsite has grown in size, quality, popularity and reputation. George and Theodore also grew to take over the management of the site, as well as increasing the family by two wives and six children. To visit the campsite is to meet the Fligos family: all twelve of them!
The following photographs taken in March 2018 show some of the many fine new features on the site: the new entrance and reception building, the second swimming pool and beach bars, the magnificent restaurant, several blocks with very modern toilet and showering facilities, washing-up and laundry sinks, new bungalows, indoor and outdoor BBQs, refurbished apartments, a basket-ball court, a 5-a-side football field, special pitches for large motorhomes . . . all fronted by a long beach with views of Zakinthos 10-miles out across the Ionian Sea.
