In the Bialowieza Forest
The Bialowieza Forest, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve straddling Poland's border with Belarus, is one of the last and largest remnants of the immense primeval forest that once stretched across the European Plain. It is home to 800 European bison, Europe's heaviest land animal, their numbers having recovered since being hunted to the verge of extinction during the First World War. See Guardian article for more on these magnificent beasts.
