6th January (Epiphany) Wave Blessing in Igoumenitsa
The traditional wave-blessing service took place at the local harbour. A large crowd turned out, along with the local brass band and quite a few full-bearded men in long frocks holding icons for people to kiss. Tthe origin of the ceremony is lost in the mists of ancient Greek history, with Poseidon somehow implicated in the pacification. John the Baptist and the River Jordan may also have become involved along the way. Several young men compete to retrieve the wooden cross thrown by a priest into the harbour. In one picture, the winner holds the cross and the Bible he has been given as a prize.
