Puerto de Ibaneta (1067 m/3,520 ft)

The pass crosses the Pyrenees between French St-Jean-Pied-de-Port and Spanish Roncesvalles; it also the opening stage on one of the pilgrimage routes – the Camino - via Pamplona to Santiago de Compostela. The summit is marked by a hostel (closed), a modern chapel (locked) and a simple mound with a wooden cross and a pair of boots marking one pilgrim’s last resting place.
