The Basque Village of Ainhoa
Less than 2 miles from the Spanish border, the 17thC church of Maria and its graveyard stand next to the Pelota court and market square. The bulky tower, in a different stone, was a later addition. Inside are two tiers of the familiar wooden galleries, a magnificent oak-panelled ceiling and a gilded Baroque altarpiece with Corinthian columns. The immensely solid thick walls with arrow slits suggest that the building was defensive as well as religious. The single main street is lined with half-timbered houses of the 17th and 18th centuries. One of the shops specialises in gingerbread-men; another sells beauty products made from local asses’ milk!
